FAFSA: Options for Filling Out the Form

There are three ways to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Formats for the FAFSA

Students and families can fill out the FAFSA online, on their phones, or with pen and paper.

  • Online is the most common choice.
  • A paper copy of the FAFSA is made available each year.
    • View and print the 2021-2022 FAFSA paper form
    • Using pen, paper, and mailing your FAFSA via the USPS is the method that takes the longest—something to keep in mind when considering priority dates and scholarship deadlines.
  • The FAFSA can be completed in the myStudentAid mobile app.
    • myStudentAid is available—for free—in Google Play (Android) and the Apple Store (iPhone)

IMPORTANT NOTE

Students are strongly encouraged to select ONE of the above methods and stick with it for the entire application. Doing so will limit potential issues surrounding the verification that occurs later in the process of approving a student for financial aid. If students opt to complete a paper version of the FAFSA, every effort should be made to write legibly and with a pen.

Tip: Consider printing an extra paper copy to use/reference as a practice FAFSA.
